What is Corned Beef Hash?

Canned corned beef hash is a classic American food made from corned beef, potatoes, and other ingredients, usually onion and spices. You may see corned beef hash served as a side dish or as an ingredient in other dishes like scrambled eggs, omelets, casseroles or cooked with a fried egg on top. Here in the South, it’s a breakfast staple right up there with biscuits and sausage gravy or shrimp and grits!

Whether you’re making this dish for a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning, Sunday brunch, or a weeknight meal, the best thing about canned corned beef hash is that it’s already cooked. That means actually cooking times for you are going to be much faster because you’re just basically reheating it. But the best way to eat corned beef hash is crispy and golden brown, so let’s get into how to make that happen.

How to Make Corned Beef Hash Crispy

You can make corned beef hash with canned corned beef or buy it premade. Whichever brand of corned beef hash you buy (Hormel corned beef hash, Libby’s corned beef hash, Armour, or Great Value at Walmart) they will all be indistinguishable, so pick whatever is convenient.

There are three different ways to prepare cooked, canned corned beef hash that will give it the crispy texture that you’re looking for: air fryer, skillet, or oven. No matter which method of cooking you use, the whole process is quick, easy, and makes a delicious meal.

Air fryer

The air fryer is the king of crispy, and depending on what kind of air fryer you have, you can make almost anything in it! It’s so much easier to reach that desired crispiness in an air fryer because the air and heat are constantly circulating around the top, bottom, and sides of your food.

That means not only does your food get crispy, but it also cooks very evenly. Plus, it’s the most healthy option because you don’t have to use any oils or butter to achieve that crispy texture.

1. Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Place the corned beef hash in the air fryer basket, making sure to spread it out evenly.

3. Cook for 10 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.

4. Increase the temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until the desired crispiness is achieved. 5. Remove the corned beef hash from the air fryer and enjoy!

Skillet

Using a skillet on the stovetop is probably the most common way to cook canned corned beef hash. Be sure to keep the heat up and keep an eye on your corned beef hash. You’ll need a consistently high temperature to make it crispy.

1. Preheat a regular large skillet or a well-seasoned cast iron skillet over low-medium heat.

2. Add 1 tablespoon of oil or butter to the pan and heat. Vegetable oils will be best for not changing the flavor of the hash. Butter works too, but butter burns more easily than an oil with a high smoke point like vegetable oil.

3. Add the corned beef hash to the skillet and spread it out in an even layer.

4. Increase to medium-high heat and let the hash cook for 2-3 minutes or until it begins to brown.

5. Flip the hash over and press down on it with a spatula, then let it cook for another 2-3 minutes.

6. Continue flipping and pressing until the hash is crisp and browned on both sides.

7. Serve the hash hot, and enjoy!

Oven

Finally, if you want to make a crispy crumbled canned corned beef hash, you can also put it in the oven. The trick here is to use a baking sheet rather than a baking dish. The baking dish will only allow for the crispy texture to mostly be on the top of your dish rather than all the way through it.

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

2. Grease a baking sheet with butter or oil.

3. Place the corned beef hash in the dish.

4. Bake for 25 minutes or until the hash is golden brown and crispy.

5. Serve hot. Enjoy!

Cooking Methods That Will Make Canned Corned Beef Hash Mushy

If you want to avoid mushy corned beef hash, you’ll want to avoid using a pot on the stovetop, a slow cooker, or a microwave oven. All of these methods will hold in moisture and not allow the has to spread out enough to dry out from the heat.

How to Make Reheated Corned Beef Hash Crispy Again

If you had some leftover corned beef hash that you want to enjoy again, it’s easy to crisp it right back up! All you need to do is repeat the steps you took to prepare it in the first place. Keep an eye on your canned corned beef hash to make sure it doesn’t get burned the second time around.

These are the tips and tricks for making your canned Hormel corned beef hash crispy and perfect. With these tips, you can make a delicious and savory meal that everyone will love!

  1. I used the oven method. At 25 minutes it was no where near done. I bumped up the temp to 400 and went another 15-20 minutes- THEN it was done.

  2. Thank you for this, I love corned beef hash but definitely like it crispy, not that mushy stuff!
