FAQs
Potatoes Au Gratin are traditionally thinly sliced potatoes that are covered in a cheese sauce, then covered with breadcrumbs and baked until brown.
Scalloped potatoes can be prepared with or without cheese and sometimes have breadcrumbs added which makes many people use the two terms interchangeably.
Red or Yukon Gold potatoes are perfect for this slow cooker scalloped potato recipe because they hold their shape during cooking. Many recipes call for Russet potatoes but cooking website The Kitchn suggests that this variety falls apart after being cooked in a scalloped or au gratin recipes.
Here are a few other ways to serve potatoes that your family will enjoy:

Could I cook these on low for more hours or will that make it soupy?
Delicious! Love the Gouda cheese!
★★★★★
These cheesy scalloped potatoes are so easy to make since it uses the slow cooker. Using yellow or red potatoes means you don’t have to worry about your potatoes becoming mushy. They are cooked perfectly in this recipe and it’s SO yummy! Excellent side dish to serve with steak, ham, chicken, pork, pretty much any main dish meat. YUM!

Au gratin potatoes are so delicious but in the oven they can be tricky to time with other meals. Definitely going to try these in the crockpot! I have made them partly in the Instant Pot but then had to finish them in the oven. They were good, but having it in one dish is always better 🙂
I made this tonight. My potatoes did not cook all the way, even though I followed the recipe. The taste was quite good, even with them being slightly firmer than they should, The sides of the casserole got really overly done, though. Overall I think I will make it again.
It sounds like your crock pot is heating unevenly.
Question…. I’m looking to make this for a night at a cabin. I do not have a stove top there and would just rely on my crock pot and grill. Do you think I could make the cheese sauce before hand to mix it all together in the crock a day later?
I haven’t tried myself but I don’t think it would be a problem Kathy. If you do try it can you come back and let us know how it was? ~Melissa
I made this for tonight it looks AMAZING,
What size crockpot did you use? If I am making this for Thanksgiving, can I double the recipe? Do you have any recommendations for time if I do double the recipe?
Actually Jennifer, this was when we were living in England so it was a small European crockpot and I don’t know the exact size. My normal US crockpot is 6 quart and I would guess that it could hold the recipe doubled but I would lean towards the longer end of the cooking time. I wish I had time to test it for you because I know Thanksgiving is not the time you want to experiment! If you do double it can you come back and let us know how it went? ~Melissa
What is the green I see in your photos? There was s no herb or spice listed in the ingredients…
Hi Britta, It’s just a little bit of dried parsley. I added it for taking the pictures, not for taste. It helps the photographs if there is something to break up the solid colors! ~Melissa
Got these cheesy au gratin potatoes in one slow cooker going and beef ribs BBQing in the other.. The mess is in the dishwasher getting cleaned up now. Will make a pitcher of iced tea later on and heat up some rolls and in 4 or 5 hours we will be having a feast! Thanks for the recipe that allows me to have favorite foods without heating up the kitchen for hours with the oven !
I hope you enjoyed it Nancy-it’s one of my favorite comfort foods! ~Melissa
Large potatoes as in russetts? Are we talking 3 or 4 pounds?
I’m interested in making the SLOW COOKER AU GRATIN POTATOES but am looking to serve it as a side for roughly 16 people.
So you have any tips for making this a successful attempt?
Thanks!
This sounds amazing, I think I’ll try it tonight. It’s definitely Fall here and this will warm us up for sure. Your photography is beautiful, too. Where did you learn?
Oh thank you Treasure, I hope you like it. On my blogging resources page I list two things that really helped my photography-the Shoot, Fly, Shoot photography course for learning to shoot on manual and The Food Photography Book by Nagi from Recipe Tin Eats. Honestly, since I’ve switched to my Sony a6000 camera I rarely shoot on manual though-that camera makes it easy to take great pictures! (I have that and my lenses listed on that page as well.) https://thehappierhomemaker.com/blogging-resources/ Hope that helps! ~Melissa
I’m going to have to try some of these recipes. I love potatoes, but often get tired of the same styles all the time
Me too Janine, I hate feeling like I’m in a rut! ~Melissa
I get lazy sometimes and I end up just making mashed potatoes.
