Easy Guinness Beer Bread
Easy Guinness Beer Bread has just three ingredients and a rich, sweet flavor that only Guinness can give! Whether you make this easy beer bread for St. Patrick’s Day or any time you have a spare Guinness, you will love this easy yeast-free bread.
Years ago we lived in England for a year and it gave us a lot of travel opportunities. One of our favorite trips was to Dublin and we were able to tour the Guinness brewery while we were there.
I’m not a huge beer drinker but I was surprised by how much I not only enjoyed the tour but also learning to differentiate the flavors when tasting Guinness. It is actually my go-to beer now if I’m going to have one.
All that was to say that last week I was making some beer bread and instead of using my standard recipe I decided to make a Guinness version and it was amazing-probably the best beer bread I’ve ever had. The Guinness added a subtle caramel type of flavoring and I switched out standard sugar for brown sugar to accent that even more.

Why I love this recipe
There is no yeast required to make beer bread so it is a super fast recipe. The carbonation in the beer helps the bread dough to rise as it bakes. The result is a warm, slightly nutty bread perfect for slicing and toasting or serving on the side with Instant Pot Beef Stew or Loaded Baked Potato soup.
Ingredients
- self-rising flour
- light brown sugar
- 1 pint Guinness
How to Make Guinness Beer Bread
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x5x3″ bread pan.
- Whisk the flour and brown sugar together.
- Add the Guinness and stir until just blended-don’t over stir.
- Pour into the pan and tap the pan down on a counter a few times to level the dough.
- Bake for 50 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
The bread cuts better once cooled but tastes amazing warm with some butter so I’ll let you decide whether to let it cool or not! I usually let mine cool a little bit before cutting and then reheat it a few seconds in the microwave before eating.
Storage
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- To freeze, wrap the bread with plastic wrap and place it in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.
Oh, and you see that Irish beef stew in the background of the picture above? That’s made with Guinness too, it’s the ultimate in comfort food!!

I made this but substituted one cup of oats for one cup of the flour! Delicious! And so easy. Thanks for sharing. I just wonder if the oats changed nutritional value in any way?
Can I use gluten free flour and add the baking soda and salt to make it self-rising? Will it work?
Yes, that will work!
I’m in the US and have never heard of self-rising flour. Is there an equivalent (or different name) that I can use for this recipe?
